Coastal aeolian sediment transport in an active bed surface layer: Tracer study and conceptual model

چکیده
Coastal aeolian sediment transport is influenced by supply-limiting factors caused sorting grain size. Sorting processes can lead to coarsening of the bed surface and influence formation ripples. However, bedforms might have on magnitude not fully understood. This study explores their mode using tracers. Sand was painted in different colors according particle size placed a supratidal beach Noordwijk, Netherlands. Several experiments were conducted with varying wind speeds. Surface sampling cameras tracked sand color movement surface, velocity measured. The tracer showed that ripples developed moderate conditions. Once had formed, supply finer grains downwind direction decreased over time, while coarser remained constant. A linear relationship between ripple migration speed found. For higher speeds, no or differences fractions observed. Instead, alternating phases erosion deposition observed, which could be related local variations velocity. Based these results literature, conceptual model for an active layer two regimes corresponding (I) high (II) intended guide selection models as function speed, characteristics, upwind supply. Regime I, modeled II third power combination process-based accounting limitations.

Connecting aeolian sediment transport with foredune development
Foredune volume is an important factor for coastal safety and depends on the balance between erosion through wave attack and sediment input via aeolian transport. Dune erosion can be simulated with good accuracy, but predictions of aeolian sediment transport into the foredunes are still difficult to make. As part of a larger project that aims to model foredune development over decades, the goal...
متن کاملA New Conceptual Model for Aeolian Transport Rates on Beaches
In this paper a new conceptual model for aeolian sediment transport rates is presented. Traditional sediment transport formulations have known limitations when applied to coastal beach situations. A linear model for sediment transport rates with respect to wind speed is proposed and supported by both data and numerical model simulations. The presented model does not solve complex wind fields an...

Aeolian Transport of Coarse Sediment in the Modern Martian Environment
Introduction: Evidence of aeolian sandstone outcrops, migrating sand dunes, and changes in surface albedo changes caused by redistribution of surface dust on Mars demonstrate that aeolian processes have been and continue to be a dominant agent of surface modification [3] [7] [9]. It is known that strong wind events on Mars can be responsible for lifting large amounts of sediment into the atmosp...
متن کاملAeolian sediment transport following wildfire in sagebrush steppe
Wind erosion of soil is an appreciable but unstudied event following fires in cold desert. We examined aeolian transport of sediment for 1 year following fire in semi-arid shrub steppe on loess soils in southern Idaho, USA. Sediment collectors were used to determine horizontal mass transport of soil and saltation sensors and anemometers were used to determine saltation activity (fraction of tim...
